EXCLUSION NOTICE SCHEME

Picture

The Tynemouth Exclusion Notice Scheme was set up to tackle shoplifting crimes within the policing district of Tynemouth Area Command. Nationally retail crime costs over £1.4 Billion, and of this £650 million accounts for Thefts from Shops (Shoplifting). Over 130 shops and retail establishments in the Tynemouth Area Command of Northumbria Police, have joined together to participate in the scheme. The scheme is controlled by the Crime Prevention Panel and coordinated by the Crime Prevention Officer/ Panel Secretary. Convicted shoplifters are served a notice excluding them from ALL shops participating in the scheme. Service of the exclusion notices makes the excluded person a trespasser and therefore can be made to leave. Photograph Albums are held at 15 different locations including the CCTV Control Room which monitors shopping centers.

In the first six months of setting up the scheme. shoplifting offences committed by the excluded persons fell from 93 offences to only 7.
